How do you find such cute things thrifting?

\Madz Thrift Finds

How do you find such cute things thrifting? I often get this question when people see my 70s themed house with old oil paintings, vintage chests, and mismatched mugs or when I’m walking around in my 80’s flowy pants that make me look like I walked straight out of a Prince music video. I decided to answer this question by taking you through the Do’s and Don’ts of curating the perfect finds from your local thrift stores. This is for aspiring thrifters that are hoping to get insight into the thrifting world and an understanding of what exactly goes into curating your wardrobe or home decor second hand. If you are from the depop world, move along babes.

First we start by manifesting what we want. Charge your crystals, burn some incense, or do whatever it is you do when you need something from the universe and picture those items you need clearly in your head. Imagine yourself wearing it or hanging it on your wall. Don’t just picture the item, imagine you already own this magical object and the vibes you are trying to create. Now forget the item… because you probably aren’t going to find that exact thing in a second hand store. Let’s circle back to that ~vibe~ we just created. Thrifting is the art of curating unique pieces at an affordable price with the goal of expression. What style are you going for and what will contribute to that aesthetic? I like to think of this as a pinterest board. Find a color palette, a certain design, and the actual item you need to begin. This widens the aperture of thrifting possibilities!

Now that we have a clear intention behind our thrifting journey, it’s time to shop! When I’m in a new town, I opt for Goodwill cause I know exactly what to expect – low prices, tightly packed clothing racks that are almost impossible to sort through, and loads of gaudy jewelry you might recognize if you’ve ever snooped through your grandma’s closet. I say that with the deepest respect. Another great option is smaller charity shops. Prices might be a little higher, but typically the quality is nicer. I do NOT, nor will I ever, endorse Plato’s Closet or overpriced “vintage stores” that mark 2014 Aeropostale t-shirts for $20. I think they are a disgrace to the thrifting community and I will not elaborate. Stick to Goodwill or local charity shops!

The fundamental core of thrifting quality, cute items is simply that good things take time. People are looking for convenience and don’t look through EVERYTHING on the racks, leading to little success and turning them off to thrifting. Skimming is not an option. Who knows what you can find stuffed between a local club soccer shirt and the outdated grandma blouse. I am the proud owner of a brown leather Coach purse that was once smashed between a child’s backpack and a random HEB reusable bag. Score! With patience, a dedicated sweet treat break, and persistence, you can find some good stuff. Additionally, new items are constantly being put out weekly, sometimes daily. Decorating your living room or finding a dress for an event can take time and it’s worth taking multiple trips to the same store to see what you can find. Our thrifting Mantra – good things take time, this isn’t Shein! Ok, some of it will be Shein.

To my dear readers, I want to warn you of what I call “Bargain Blind”. Just because something is a bargain does not mean it’s cute. Go ahead and reread that sentence. It’s inevitable that you will make this mistake once or twice. I myself have fallen victim to the Bargain Blindness. I enthusiastically brought home this silky, bright green dress excited to wear out, only to try it on and realize that the $7 price tag prevented me from seeing how hideous the dress actually was. To avoid this, I separate out all of my items and imagine myself in a situation where I actually wear this item out. Is it cute, is it a bargain? If it’s not both, it goes back. This is not to be confused with a piece of advice I often hear people say, “if you wouldn’t buy it at full price, don’t buy it.” F That! Times are tough, inflation is high, and I’d rather spend my money on experiences. But if you found this in a Zara or Anthropologie, would you think it’s cute? Sometimes taking yourself out of the thrift store helps you determine if the item is keeper.

One thing to keep in mind, especially when it comes to furniture, is that a simple DIY can transform that piece into the ~vibe~ you were always wanting. One coat of paint? Maybe new knobs? A little wood glue? Maybe even just as simple as a wipe down. There is potential for everything, just don’t overestimate your abilities or underestimate how lazy you are. I definitely have pieces of art hanging on my wall whom’s frames are waiting to be painted. (Pro Tip: Consider refreshing thrifted art frames by painting them in a vibrant hue that echoes a color from the artwork itself. This not only modernizes the piece but also infuses your home with a lively burst of color!) Thrifting gives you the opportunity to get creative!

So, fellow thrifters, as you embark on this colorful journey, remember that the magic of thrifting lies not just in the items you find, but in the stories you create along the way. Embrace the thrill of the hunt and let your unique style shine through every piece you curate. With intention and a dash of patience, you’ll discover treasures that resonate with your vibe and transform your space into a true reflection of who you are.

Now go forth and let your creativity flourish! Happy thrifting, and may your finds be ever fabulous!

P.S. Don’t forget to thank the thrift gods for your finds;)
