Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

One question we often hear, whether it be an icebreaker question, an interview question, a rhetorical question, or even just in self-reflection is where do I see myself in 10 years? Why is it so hard to answer one seemingly simple question?

I have been asked it many times and have witnessed people mumble and stutter trying to answer the dreadful question, or give an unthoughtful shoulder shrug. “mhm”.

I know we have all daydreamed about being multi-million or billionaires, as CEOs of big corporations, winning the Nobel Prize by ending world hunger, or becoming the real-world Spiderman. We all have big aspirations or big dreams for the future, but what stops us from saying this when we answer the question? I believe it is a combination of fear of being judged and scared of not reaching the goal. It makes me wonder if Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg was asked this question would they have answered the CEO?

Answering the question realistically might come out as dull and with a lack of thought.

“Yeah, I see myself working a 9-5”.

It’s a boring answer. It might not serve the purpose of people getting to know you better and getting insight into your life. But it’s still good to think about it because if the current life you are living is leading you to end up working a dead-end 9-5 job and that’s not what you want, you might reconsider a couple of life choices, reset your goal, and rewrite your plan to achieve it.

Answering the question gives you insight into your life and lets you know where you are currently heading. The life you’re living is probably based upon things you value or what you like doing. Taking time to reflect and think about these things can be crucial in taking the next step in our lives.

The question, “Where do you see yourself in ten years?” isn’t just an exercise in talking about your future; it’s a roadmap for your journey. It gives you direction and purpose, whether sitting in an interview or chatting with a mentor. By thinking deeply about your values, balancing ambition with realism, aligning with the organization or industry, embracing change, committing to making a positive impact, and taking care of your well-being, your answer can leave a lasting impression and set you on a path to a bright future.

Ultimately, this question challenges us to dream big, act with intention, and shape a future that reflects our values and aspirations. So, what do you see when you peer into your crystal ball? It’s not just a question; it’s an opportunity to craft your story.
